FCU establishes the nation’s first preparatory School of Architecture
Share To:
Date of Issue: September 26, 2016
In order to dispel the sense that traditional models of education have failed to meet the full range of professional training requirements, FCU has in recent years set in motion the reformation of its educational mechanisms. In 2015, with authorization from the Ministry of Education, FCU consequently began the process of transforming the Department of Architecture into a preparatory school of architecture. The School, which is the first—and currently the only—preparatory school of architecture in Taiwan, began enrolling students on August 1.
According to Chang Chungming, former FCU chairman of the board, to achieve future success, universities must follow three extremely important paths: international mobility, links with industry, and innovation. To bring about innovation, he argued, the School of Architecture will rely on the experience of industry and experts in the field, which is something that the School has made an effort to do. It was recently announced, for example, that renowned architect Kengo Kuma has been invited to serve as one of the School’s lecturers and planning advisors. The School will draw on Kengo’s expertise in the field of architecture to strengthen its professional competence and build an international perspective. It was also revealed that in the future, three as-of-yet unnamed Pritzker Architecture Prize winners will also be invited to lecture at the School.
Using a Chinese proverb, newly appointed chairman of the board, Gao Chengshu, stated that education is like the eternal flow of a river, and the School of Architecture will strive to propel the flow far and wide. Like the eternal flow of water, he concluded, nurturing talented graduates is FCU’s eternal goal.
With a guiding principle of “dream BIG, make a DIFFERENCE,” the School of Architecture hopes to create a beautiful environment by “building sincerely for the common good.” At the same time, the School hopes to define a new architectural model that will establish Taichung as an international capital of architectural aesthetics, and contribute to improving the quality of Taiwan’s architectural landscape.
