Feng Chia University held the 108 Institute Development Meeting on June 21, with 88 faculty members attending it. Chairman Kao stated, “In this era, there are only team members, not stars. We are expected to work together and to be proactive and aggressive as a team.”

In order to achieve an effective meeting, teachers were requested to hand in their cellphones before the meeting. Chairman Kao handed in his cellphone first and shared that when Philips was experiencing company transformation 2 years ago, their new CEO held the meeting with the managers in the mountains in Utah. With the low temperature outside and the restriction on using cellphones and computers, he was able to identify the professional manager who had the determination to reform and build up a team to lead the company to an innovative transformation.

Chairman Kao continued, “The world is now aware of the creative destruction caused by technology. But some, in the university, just suppose that we can follow the old pattern and develop along. That is wrong. Our biggest enemy is getting used to something, which is accustomed and indolent.” He emphasized that our competitors are not only those in Taiwan, but the entire world and the future.

In President Dr. Lee’s speech, he related that there are one target and two strategies to solve three problems in the following three years. The target is to cultivate innovative talents to contribute to the transformation of the industry. For the strategies, one is to build FCU as the first university to integrate artificial intelligence into campus life and learning environment; the other strategy is to enhance students’ practical skills by implementing the “learning outcome teaching model,” which includes CDIO, design thinking and project-based learning.

The three problems which need to be solved are as follows: when universities are not the only source of knowledge innovation, how do we position ourselves? Secondly, in the era of information explosion, universities are not the only resource for students to acquire knowledge, and then how do we adjust to it? Lastly, when the industries invest in research resources internally, how should we create visibility for the graduates? Besides reaching a consensus, the Institute Development Meeting is also aimed to set a new target and come up with new plans to achieve it.
